Our People

  • As with any cooperative, our most important people are our members. The majority of our members are migrant domestic workers. Most come from the Philippines or from Indonesia, and have been living and working in Hong Kong for anything from a few months to dozens of years!
  • Our operations would come to a complete standstill without our frontline workers: our mobile tellers (or "collectors"). These are usually domestic workers who take it upon themselves to organise members into groups, and to bring our services to them. Mobile tellers process membership, collect savings deposits, issue loans and collect repayment. They devote their precious time on their days off to provide this service, for no compensation. They are our heroes.
  • Our back-office team is made up of our manager and our student volunteers. They keep our membership records and our accounts in shape, communicate with mobile tellers and members, make sure we meet our audit requirements with the Registrar of Credit Unions, and do all the various little things that that generally keep us going!
  • Our work is supervised by three committees made up of elected officers. Elections are held every year at our Annual Members' Meeting. All committee positions are honorary, and officers receive no compensation whatsoever.

We work extremely hard to make sure we are super careful with our members' savings. We exist because our members trust us to keep their money safe, to be transparent about our processes, charges and fees, and to always always look out for our members' well-being. It is of paramount importance to us that we always maintain this trust.

How do we feel about technology? We like it! We think tech can facilitate, speed up and improve communication and processes, and we try to deploy it wherever we can. But we are not convinced that tech-based interactions can replace substantive human interactions -- not yet, and not for our target segment. Maybe that day will come, but until then... we are what we are, and we do what we do!
